In January, 2017 DonCARES of Philadelphia began their academic tutoring sessions at the U School in North Philadelphia. The U School is an innovative high school that was founded by Principal Neil Geyette in 2011. Founder and President Donovan Forrest enjoys tutoring his eleventh grade mentee Kat G. at the U School. When asked about his experience mentoring, he states “Mentorship in our community is crucial. Our community’s future lies in the relationships that we as positive adults have with our children. It is those relationships that cultivate each student mentee’s sense of self-esteem, importance, and self-worth. When they see you doing it, they believe they can too.” Donovan states that

MLK Day of Service

(Crystal and Elias sorting books at our MLK Day of Service Flea Market hosted by the Strawberry Mansion Learning Center in conjunction with ENG (NonProfit) On January 16, 2017, the Strawberry Mansion Learning Center in conjunction with ENG (non-profit) and DonCARES of Philadelphia hosted a free flea market for members of the Strawberry Mansion community. Community members received free clothes, winter coats, books, and much more. Starting at eight in the morning, members of all three organizations shuffled into the Strawberry Mansion Learning Center bringing boxes of donations and helping to organize the traditional learning center into a flea market. Promoting Education

In January, 2017 board member Janae Rockemore a recent Temple University Graduate and current candidate for the Miss. Philadelphia Scholarship Pageant led a public speaking workshop at the Strawberry Mansion Learning Center. She taught the youth members at SMLC about the importance of projecting your voice and speaking with confidence. Janae describes herself as a an effervescent woman with an ardency for education the arts and advocacy for the youth. Since her joining of DonCARES of Philadelphia in October, 2016 Janae has embodied the founding principles of a DonCARES mentor which are care and consistency.
