DonCARES Receives Community Development Award from NABA & TU BLSA

On Friday, February 22, 2019, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. received the Community Development Award from the National Association of Black Accountants, Temple Chapter and Temple's Black Law Students Association. The award was given to a student-run organization at Temple that frequently participates in community service initiatives focused on maintaining and uplifting Philadelphia's neighborhoods. Second Annual Temple Black Men's Forum

On Thursday, February 21, 2019 DonCARES & Strong Men Overcoming Obstacles Through Hard work, hosted the second annual Temple Black Men's Forum. The purpose of our second annual Temple's Black Men Forum is to foster a supportive atmosphere of brotherhood among the black male community on campus. We are concerned with the political, social, and cultural issues regarding black men and women on Temple University’s campus and beyond, and we promote greater awareness and understanding of these issues through all appropriate means, including panel discussions, meetings, seminars, and active engagement with the community. The cornerstone of DonCARES of Philadelphia's vision is for students of color city-wide to each have a college student of color as a mentor. At DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. our mentors believe strongly in utilizing education as an essential component in motivating and inspiring inner-city youth in North Philadelphia. As mentors we believe in using one-on-one mentoring as a method to effectively engage the youth and provide them with services and opportunities that will magnify their learning experience. New Year, New Goals

On Thursday, February 7, 2019, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. and The National Council of Negro Women, Temple Section hosted a vision board workshop for young women at The U School in North Philadelphia. During the workshop Temple students, Talaya Pollard and Jaya Bolden talked with high school students about their dreams and aspirations. One student who chose to be anonymous stated that she wanted to live in a neighborhood with a lot of trees and shrubs. Talaya who is originally from Washington D.C. agreed with the student that cities like Philadelphia aren't primarily places where greenery is common in residential neighborhoods. Fighting Family Food Insecurity at School

In early February, 2019 DonCARES launched their Stand-Up To Hunger is a specified initiative targeting students and their families who struggle with food insecurity. ​DonCARES sponsors recommended students and their families with gift-cards to eateries, restaurants, and grocery stores. Through recommendations from school staff, DonCARES anonymously grants these stipends monthly. Food insecurity is rampant in low-income communities in Philadelphia. Since over 60,000 students live below the poverty guideline, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. will work to combat this injustice.
