Mentor of the Month: Elijah Zimmerman

Elijah Zimmerman is recognized as the April 2019 DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. Mentor of the Month. Zimmerman was selected because he has shown outstanding commitment to our core values and has built a admirable relationship with his mentee. Zimmerman is currently a senior at Temple University majoring in Electrical Engineering and very active on Temple's campus as members of both The National Society of Engineers and Temple University's Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. DonCARES grants Whole Foods Gift Cards to Families in Need

In early February, 2019 DonCARES launched their Say No To Hunger Initiative. The recently started initiative specifically targets students and their families at The U School who struggle with food insecurity. ​As part of the larger campaign, DonCARES sponsors recommended students and their families with gift-cards to eateries, restaurants, and grocery stores to fight food insecurity. Through recommendations from school staff, DonCARES attempts to grant these gift cards monthly. Food insecurity is rampant in low-income communities in Philadelphia. Since over 60,000 students live below the poverty guideline, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. will work to combat this injustice. As an organization

Mentee of the Month-Breyonna Scott

Breyonna Scott is recognized as the April 2019 DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. Mentee of the Month. Scott was selected because of her commitment to her education and her perseverance in dealing with life's challenges. Scott is currently a Senior at The U School and very passionate about black studies and has been a member of DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. since October 2018. DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. would like to extend our biggest congrats to our first and second place winners for our Sadie T.M. Alexander Social Justice Essay Contest!! Both Sequoi Felix and India Gay wrote beautifully written essays during Women's History Month and were awarded certificates and $100 visa gift cards. The objective of this contest was to encourage high school student participants to think critically about issues that effect women of color. While focusing mainly on women of color in leadership/decision making decisions, participants will analyze how macro and micro-aggressions disproportionately effect them at staggering rates. Interview Workshop with The Temple Owlettes

On Monday, April 1, 2019, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. and The Temple Owlettes hosted a interview workshop for 10th grade students at The U School in North Philadelphia. The Owlettes are a majorette dance team at Temple University that was founded in 2018. The Owlettes became interested in serving in the community after DonCARES announced they were looking for an organization to collaborate with at The U School. The Bare Necessities is an initiative for students that focuses on career building, resume workshops, and interview etiquette.
