DonCARES leads resume workshop at Samuel Fels High School

Executive Director Donovan Forrest returned to his Alma Mater Samuel Fels High School to conduct a resume workshop with 12th-grade students in veteran teacher George Panrock's classroom. Forrest, a 2013 graduate of Fels was excited to be back at his alma mater and give back to what he referred to as very deserving students. A few weeks ago, Forrest helped over thirty-five students in grades 10, 11, and 12 start their resumes. On Wednesday, October 23, 2019, the men of DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. and Strong Men Overcoming Obstacles Through Hard Work, Temple University Chapter hosted a Man-Up Discussion for male-identifying high school students at The U School. Man Up is a specified initiative targeting male high school students at The U School. Members of both organizations talked to the students about each member and U School student's definitions of success. Vision Board Workshop at The U School

On Wednesday, October 10, 2019, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc., The National Council of Negro Women, Temple Section, and Psychology Majors of Color hosted a vision board workshop for young women at The U School in North Philadelphia. During the workshop DonCARES members Nayanka Paul and Cameron Battle-Bradshaw talked with high school students about their dreams and aspirations. One student stated that she wanted to become a Dermatologist and described her desire to break the stigma against mental health. Neighborhood Clean-Up

On Saturday, October19, 2019, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. and several other organizations from Temple University collaborated on a street clean up at The U School. In attendance were DonCARES mentors: Madison, Mariah, Mu, and Don. The Case for More Mentors of Color

Every January, hundreds of mentoring programs across the United States celebrate National Mentoring Month. For many educators, mentors, mentees, and families, National Mentoring Month is a time to reflect on the positive impact that mentoring has made in their lives. In September and October 2019, DonCARES of Philadelphia matched 12 high school students of color at The U School with college student mentors of color from Temple University. DonCARES hosts professional development for high school students at Fels High School

On Tuesday, October 8, 2019, DonCARES Executive Director Donovan Forrest hosted a resume workshop for forty students at Samuel Fels High School. Forrest is a Graduate of Samuel Fels High School and was excited to be back at his Alma Mater. The workshop consisted of four parts. The first part was a brief lecture on first impressions and how to make a good one. Forrest asked students to think about what makes a person impressionable. Students mentioned that the first thing they see when they meet someone for the first time is how they are dressed, second to their facial expression. DonCARES Grants $1,025.00 Worth of Grocery Store Gift Cards Since February

Food insecurity is rampant in low-income communities in Philadelphia. As part of our #Saynotohunger campaign we grant a $100 gift card to students and families in need at The U School. Since February, DonCARES has granted a total of $1,025.00 worth of grocery store gift cards, surpassing the initial $1,000 goal that was set forth in February. Mentee of the Month- Albert Feliz

Albert Feliz is recognized as the October 2019 DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. Mentee of the Month. Feliz was selected because of his commitment to his education and his perseverance in overcoming life's challenges. Feliz is currently a Senior at The U School and has been a member of DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. since February 2017. Currently, Albert has been in the mentoring program longer than any other student as a participant since his Freshman year of high school during the 2016-2017 school year.
