On Saturday, October 27, 2018 DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. Founder and Executive Director Donovan Forrest spoke at Philadelphia Youth Action, Inc. Forrest was invited by Yasmeen Watson Sharif, an alumna of Temple University and current Director of Youth Action's Service Leader Program. Philadelphia Youth Action, Inc is a service-based organization that hosts programming for high school students at University of the Sciences on Saturdays during the semester.
Forrest spoke to fifteen high school students in grades 10-12 about his journey to become the Director of DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. and a current college student at Temple University.
Forrest began his presentation with a quote by Booker T. Washington which is also a guiding quote in Forrest's life. "Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome." Forrest described the trek from being a troubled youth to a young man with a passion for mentoring and giving back to his community. "I've faced many challenges but I never gave up, and you shouldn't either. There's much power in that."
When a student in the audience asked what the future holds for DonCARES, Forrest responded with a smirk: "To be honest, I have no idea. Looking back three or four years, I never we would be here. I know its cliche but I could possibly see DonCARES becoming an Afro-centered school. There's much representation needed in education. Building DonCARES is definitely the foundation of something great, I believe with the right history being taught, and the right type of educators supporting it, I could see it happening." Forrest said.
