What is your favorite quote?

"You will be wounded many times in your life. You'll make mistakes. Some people will call them failures but I have learned that failure is really God's way of saying, "Excuse me, you're moving in the wrong direction." It's just an experience, just an experience." - Oprah Winfrey

How long have you been a member of DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc?

I became a member of DonCARES June of 2018, so I been with DonCARES for about 6 months.

What is your favorite thing about spending time with your mentee?

My favorite think about spending time with my mentee is our discussions. I love listening to her speak. I admire the mind of the youth. Every session with my mentee is an opportunity to learn something new. Not only am I impacting her life by being a friend and role model; she's is also impacting my life by giving me the privilege and opportunity to be apart of her life. Being able to watch her grow and transform into an amazing person is the most rewarding part.

What has being in a mentoring relationship taught you about yourself?

I consider my mentee a very transparent person. Her ability to open up and discuss very personal topics is truly admiring. It's a quality that I lack but hope to gain. The more I am around her the more I feel the need to work on my transparency. The ability to comfortably discuss the struggles you have gone through shows others that they're not alone.

What advice do you have for prospective mentors?

"Be who you needed when you were younger" I feel that this quote embodies exactly what mentoring is about. As a mentor, we must always remember to be consistent as well as reliable. Most of these kids just want someone to be there for them. Someone that they can open up to and speak to without judgement. It's our job to be that role model for them. It takes time but I promise it's rewarding. The ability to impact a child's life in a positive way, is an unforgettable feeling.
