Advocating for Unaccompanied Minors (Say No To Hunger Campaign)

May 2, 2019

For the third month in a row, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. granted a $75.00 Whole Foods gift card to a family in need at The U School in North Philadelphia.  This month, the gift card was received by an unaccompanied minor in Ms. Paula Crawford's class at The U School.

In early February, 2019 we launched our Say No To Hunger Initiative. The recently started initiative specifically  targets students and their families at The U School who struggle with food insecurity. As part of the larger campaign, DonCARES sponsors recommended students and their families with gift-cards to Whole Foods to fight insecurity. Through recommendations from school staff, DonCARES attempts to grant these gift cards monthly.

Food insecurity is rampant in low-income communities in Philadelphia. Since over 60,000 students live below the poverty guideline, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. works to combat this injustice. As an organization we believe no student should struggle with hunger especially when one of their goals is to do well academically. Potential recipients are eligible to receive a $75.00 gift card to Whole Foods if they qualify.  In February, 2019  we granted a gift card to the mother of two of our mentees in our program.  In April, we granted a gift card to the single mother of two seniors at The U School.

In addition, to providing gift cards to U School families, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. makes an effort to give meals to students at our events and outings. With the help of your donations, we can help cover the costs of meals for our monthly group mentoring events at The U School.
