1) Why did you choose to get involved with DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc.?
I chose to become a mentor for DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. so my mentee can take advantage of my experience transitioning from high school to college and use that to their advantage when they’re experiencing a similar transition whether it be from high school to college, to the work force, to trade school, etc.
2) How has mentoring work influenced your career decisions?
Becoming aware of how beneficial having a mentor can be has fueled my desire to give a high school student those kinds of benefits while they’re in the middle of making important decisions for life after high school. Although it may not ultimately become a career for me I would love to do it in my spare time alongside my career because of how beneficial it can be.
3) How are you spending your summer?
This summer I’ve been working between two jobs and saving money for college. When I’m not preoccupied with that I take the time to go visit my college friends!
4) What impact has your summer experience had on your development as a black man and undergraduate student?
I think I’ve learned a lot about myself and my place/purpose in the world as an African American male who identifies with more than one underrepresented group of people. This summer was very eye-opening in the sense that it also particularly allowed me to reflect on things in my life that have molded me into the young adult that I am today and to work on things that need fixing in my personal life.
